Here's How New York and the Hip-Hop Community Reacted to Prodigy's Passing

The world lost a real one. Whether you knew him as Bandana P, Banana Clip P or simply as one-half of the Infamous Mobb Deep, Prodigy is perhaps best-known for his grisly wordplay and imagery. A true New York legend, P even posed for his Supreme photo tee against a rickety airbrushed backdrop of the city. And in many ways, that shoot sums up P’s career: he was a product of his environment, capable of crafting vivid, touching art out of even the most hard-to-look-at details. When P rapped that he would “rock you in your face, stab your brain with your nose bone” on “Shook Ones, Pt. II,” you felt it. And he knew it — P was an early adopter of the Internet and he took credit for setting many of the trends that have since become commonplace in hip-hop, be it Pro Tools, getting neck tattoos or simply setting up a blog.
Here’s how the hip-hop community mourned the loss of the Queens legend.

Prodigy of Mobb Deep Has Died at 42

It is with heavy hearts that we must share the sad news of the passing of Albert Johnson otherwise known to the world as Prodigy, one-half of legendary Queens rap crew Mobb Deep. According to reports, Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago due to a sickle cell anemia crisis after a performance in Las Vegas, although the cause of death has yet to be released. As many Mobb Deep loyalists know, this was a disease he’s been battling his whole life. Prodigy’s publicist has since released a statement on his death:

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

Lil Wayne brought out Drake as his last special guest for his first ever “Lil Weezyana Fest.” In this clip you can see Drake performing his Meek Mill diss “Back To Back.”
                 

Lil Wayne was in a nostalgic mood for “Lil Weezyana Fest.” He brought out “The Squad” and did various old mixtape songs. He also brought out the Hot Boys members that could make it for a reunion. Obviously B.G. is still locked up and Wayne now has legal issues with Birdman. But, Turk, Mannie Fresh and Juvenile came out to shut the stage down. He brought each out one at time to do a solo song and then went on to do some classic Cash Money records. Hits like “Bling Bling” and “Back That Ass Up.”

Detroit rapper Big Sean is back once again with the drop of his new visual for I Know featuring Jhene Aiko and produced by DJ Mustard.

Fabolous gives the green light and premires his latest visual for You Made Me featuring Tish Hyman produced by Chase N. Cashe. This is taken from Fabolous recent EP called The Young OG Project, which is out right now.


De La Soul decide to liberate this collaboration with Nas titled God It produced by G_FORCE. De La Soul has launch a kick starter to raise support for their forthcoming studio album. It will feature guest appearances by Damon Albarn (of Blur/Gorillaz), 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, David Byrne and more. They have raised over $470k so far.

Detroit rapper DeJ Loaf is back with the release of her latest visual for Me U & Hennessy produced by DDS and directed by Solmaz Saberi.


Music newcomer, Chris Scholar, debuts today his new video for his track, called Buckin. The video, which is self-directed by Scholar and pays homage to Memphis’ 1990’s dance culture, showcases Scholar’s dance moves through the city while singing about his loyalty to his female love interest (who is played by touted dancer,  Laida Yates ).
The video is in support of his upcoming project, Semester. Scholar has been building buzz through his performances at various tours in the U.S., and his previous videos I Got it Babe, MDK, Usain Bolt.


Young Thug decides to give us a brand new visual for Constantly Hating featuring Birdman. This is the first track off Young Thug upcoming mixtape Barter 6 and that his debut album will be titled Hy!£UN35, which stands for Hi-Tunes, dropping on  August 28th.
