Tokyo-based immersive art collective teamLab will soon opening a new exhibition in partnership with the Melbourne International Arts Festival and Martin Browne Contemporary in Sydney. Known for work that pushes the boundaries of technology while remaining grounded in nature, teamLab’s “Reversible Rotation” upholds and even expounds upon that mindset.
“Reversible Rotation” will feature four computer-generated simulations at Tolarno Galleries, each representing a calming movement that aims to remove any barrier between the viewer and the piece through capturing the slow passage of time. These simulations are all named in line with their themes: Waves of Light is a sprawling screen that captures the methodical motion of waves crashing, yielding a peaceful feeling. Enso – Cold Light references the Zen practice of drawing a circle with a single brush stroke, representing enlightenment, the universe and other expansive conceits.
Completing the set are two variations on teamLab’s core Reversible Rotation piece, one in black in white and the other in cold light. Both will depict the act of writing Japanese sho (calligraphy), while rotating the forms in three dimensional space, offering a contemporary interpretation of the traditional ink letterforms.
“teamLab: Reversible Rotation” will be open to the public free of charge from October 5 until November 2 at Tolarno Galleries. Learn more over on the Melbourne International Arts Festival’s website, and view the works in action via Tolarno Galleries’ recent Instagram Live video.
Most recently, teamLabs took over an abandoned bath house with Megaliths.

With recent installments in Los Angeles and Milan, the “AKIRA ART WALL PROJECT” is now making its way to Tokyo. The exhibition, which will take place at Shibuya’s PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO and its partner gallery, GALLERY X, will showcase the works of Japanese manga legend Katsuhiro Otomo and collage artist Kosuke Kawamura.
While the PARCO shopping mall was undergoing renovation — which lasted two years and completed this year — Otomo and Kawamura brought a mash-up of Akira imagery to the 63 meter-long wall surrounding the construction site. The exhibition at the PARCO MUSEUM, which celebrates the opening of the Shibuya Parco, features a massive piece inspired by the artists’ work on the wall.
Other works included in the exhibition are Otomo’s original drawings of Akira, promotional posters from the film’s original theater run and realistic replicas of objects seen in the anime. GALLERY X, located in the basement of the museum, will showcase the artists’ three-dimensional objects and sell “AKIRA ART WALL PROJECT” merchandise.
View images of Otomo and Kawamura’s work outside the Shibuya Parco building in the gallery above. The exhibition at the PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO and GALLERY X will take place from November 22 to December 16 and November 26 to December 8, respectively.

As the story goes, 34 years ago, a couple of transport vehicles departed Nike HQ in Beaverton, Oregon, and went missing in Hawkins, Indiana. The lost shipments recently began popping up, piece by piece, and that’s how the Stranger Things and Nike collab was born. The Nike Air Tailwind ‘79 silhouette is the third release of the series. It’s swathed in a “Starcourt Mall” colorway, which takes cues from season 3 of the Netflix show, and features detailing like insoles containing the Russian code cracked by Stevie, Robin and Dustin. The shoe has taken Instagram by storm with its mostly grey upper of nylon material that can fade away to reveal secret red and black color shadings, hidden fabrics and logos.

SpongeBob SquarePants, the Nickelodeon television show that premiered in 1999, influenced a generation and has carved out a place in modern pop culture with some of the internet’s most popular memes. It comes as no surprise then that the SpongeBob Squarepants x Nike Kyrie 5 was one of the most anticipated drops of the summer. The collaboration comprises two Kyrie signature models reimagined to feature five of the show’s key characters. The “SpongeBob” silhouette is dressed in the protagonist’s classic yellow hue, complemented by a kelp-like squiggly side swoosh, red midsole, gum outsole and hand-drawn SpongeBob behind the tongue. It’s easily one of the most fun-loving shoes of the year so far.

The Air Jordan 4 remains one of the most iconic basketball silhouettes in sneaker history and it’s been close to 15 years since we’ve seen the “Cool Grey” colorway. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Air Jordan 4, Nike released a true-to-the-original edition in August, replicating a 2004 drop. The sneaker carries a subtle grey nubuck on the upper with a contrasting thick white midsole, a hint of “Varsity Maize” and black detailing on the outsole and lace loops. The design remains consistent with the OG, as seen in the tongue patch, transparent air bubble, and chrome Jumpman logo on the back heel.

The shoe’s silver elements are a tribute to the park’s Unisphere, a large globe that sits in the middle of the public space, while green detailing draws inspiration from the Statue of Liberty. The shoe boasts a mix of mesh construction, metallic leather, suede overlays and a flexible rubber outsole. ASICS’ 360-degree GEL technology contributes a performance element to the silhouette while AWAKE NY and ASICS cobranding sits along the tongue, toe and heel.
