As most basketball fans know, former NBA superstar Lamar Odom has had a rough time over the past few years. From life-threatening drug overdoses to very public personal issues, the one-time Laker has had his name plastered across the tabloids for all the wrong reasons. Now, for an exclusive written feature for The Players’ Tribune, Lamar Odom opens up and breaks down his trials and tribulations. For the very first time, Odom pens his own piece — from his point of view and in striking detail — to fully explain the troubles that have plagued his life as of late. Beginning with the now-notorious Nevada binge and its near-death aftermath, the 37-year-old writes about his recent fall from grace and his current rise back to good health and a quality life.
Even if you haven’t followed Lamar Odom’s career, the entire piece is still worth your time and can be read here. For more, you can also check out the feature’s accompanying visual above. Lamar Odom writes:

“I told myself that I’d never go to prison. I’d never mess up like that. But you know what? Life is a lot harder than you think it’s gonna be. When you’re an addict, nothing can get through to you. I never thought I was going to die. I never thought I’d be in a coma. I didn’t think I had a problem. But then I woke up in a bed with tubes coming out of my mouth — and it was real.”
