ART: P·P·O·W Gallery Spotlights Artworks Made Amidst Ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic
In these uncertain times, New York-based P·P·O·W Gallery continues to support local artists with a new online viewing room titled “Days Soon to Fade.” The presentation features works on paper by Kyle Dunn, Aaron Gilbert, Elizabeth Glaessner, among others.
A majority of the pieces spotlighted in the digital presentation were made amidst the ongoing health crisis or selected with the coronavirus pandemic in mind. Take for instance the namesake, figurative work for the show: Devin N. Morris’s Endangered Were These Days Soon To Fade. Intarsia 5, 2020 . The artist explores the challenges that arise when confined in a domestic space, both physically and psychologically. The composition features a topless male subject sitting on a chair and facing the window in a living room space.
“These works reinforce the gallery’s longstanding commitment to championing artistic practices that explore issues of race, gender, sexuality, and social equality,” explained P.P.O.W. in a statement.
P·P·O·W will donate a portion of all proceeds towards the Urban Justice Center’s Domestic Violence Project. The organization brings together lawyers, advocates, social workers and volunteers whose mission is to help survivors of domestic violence and their children live free of violence and abuse.
Head to P·P·O·W’s website for more details and check out select works above.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Play in the Dark With Starface's New "Glow Stars" Acne Patches
A label focused on breaking negative skin perceptions, Starface is now back with glow-in-the-dark iterations of its Hydro-Star pimple patches for the ultimate at-home party. Dubbed Glow Stars, these stickers will not only save your acne but will also bring back memories of your childhood bedroom walls covered in glow-in-the-dark stars.
To make these stickers glow in the dark, all you need to do is hold them under a light for a few minutes. After applying, turn your lights off to watch the patches glow brightly for an Instagram-friendly moment. The vegan, hydrocolloid Glow Stars heal any zits on the skin by drawing out pimple pus, while blocking out external bacteria and preventing picking and popping.
Arriving in limited quantities as refills for the brand’s Big Yellow pod containers, Starface’s Glow Stars will be launching on April 16 for £16 GBP (approximately $20 USD) at the label’s online store.
KICKS: Nike Sportswear Presents Energetic Air Max "Vibrant" Pack
Nike Sportswear‘s lifestyle drops are in full swing for spring, and nowhere is that more evident than on the new Air Max “Vibrant” pack. Awash in energetic tones both light and bright, the men’s and women’s pack offers new takes on the Air Max 270 React, Air Max 200, Air Max Tailwind IV, MX-720-818 and Air Max 720, seven styles in total.
Men’s pairs mostly use cool aqua blue and high-temperature neon for accents, while the women’s styles add vivid oranges and bright greens into the mix. Standard black and white shades tie everything together on each pair, and several make heavy use of gridded translucent TPE material as well for a see-through look. Special Nike branding is dispersed thorough the majority of the pack, most notably on the 200’s tongue and the 720’s bulbous Air Max unit.
The Nike Sportswear Air Max “Vibrant” pack will see a staggered rollout in April and May, with select styles loaded on the Nike webstore now, while others will arrive in the coming weeks. On the apparel front, new NSW Windrunner jackets and t-shirts are available as well.

San Francisco's de Young Museum Prepares for Major Frida Kahlo Exhibition
Although the launch has been postponed due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, the de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is preparing for its major exhibit dedicated to artist Frida Kahlo. Titled “Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving,” the exhibit will explore how Kahlo constructed her identity through self-fashioning and provide insights into her complex themes of disability and ethnicity across her art and personal life.
Kept sealed following Kahlo’s death in 1954, a selection of Kahlo’s possessions from her home in La Casa Azul will also be on view. These personal belongings include photographs, letters, jewelry, cosmetics, and intricate garments. Moreover, a total of 34 works encompassing drawings, paintings, and a lithograph that span the artist’s life will also be displayed.
“Reinforcing our institution’s long-standing close ties to Mexico, we are infinitely honored and thrilled to present Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving at the de Young museum,” states Thomas P. Campbell, Director, and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “The landmark exhibition paints a multifaceted portrait of one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century; whose vivid work provides an important window into Mexican culture, and whose extraordinary persona continues to be a source of inspiration to so many”.
Visit the de Young Museum’s website to learn more about the major presentation and stay tuned for official details on the museum’s reopening. “Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving” was previously scheduled to open on March 21st with a run through July 26.

London art consultancy West Contemporary announces the release of five rarely-seen images by iconic British photographer, Mick Rock. The limited-edition photographic prints feature intimate and candid portraits of David Bowie, Kate Moss, Freddie Mercury, and more. These visuals were initially going to be displayed as part of small show in London, but the presentation was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
20% of all print sales will go towards West Contemporary’s fundraiser to provide FFP3 masks for Britain’s National Health Service. “The NHS has always been there for me growing up in the UK and for all members of my family, which is why I want to donate 20% of sales of my new works,” said Rock. “If this virus is a reminder of anything, it’s how much we need the NHS. They are our lifeline. We owe them every effort we can think of to protect their own lives whilst they are protecting the lives of others.”
Head to West Contemporary’s website to purchase the prints in three different sizes with prices starting at £1,600.00 GBP (approx. $1, 987 USD).
In other COVID-19 relief efforts, the Kinkade Family Foundation has teamed up with the New Art Dealers Alliance to launch toilet paper prints by the late artist Thomas Kinkade as way to support struggling galleries impacted by the virus.
Interdisciplinary artist Jun Cha has unveiled a special edition print titled PROTECTOR to support the most vulnerable frontline providers combating COVID-19 in Skid Row, Downtown Los Angeles. The 35 by 28-inch print is produced on museum etching paper and includes a custom gold embossment of the sword of Archangel Michael. A portion of the proceeds from the print sale will be donated to Protect Angels, which was founded by Jun Cha to “protect the protectors.”
The black and white giclée print depicts the Archangel Michael holding a sword in triumph against evil and sickness. According to Roman Legends, the angel appeared above the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome and ended the plague of Justinian — a devastating pandemic that killed tens of millions of people. In light of the current situation, Jun Cha chose the “Protector” as the focus of his work to pay homage to the healthcare workers fighting coronavirus around the world.
Beginning April 22 at 1 p.m. EDT, PROTECTOR will launch on Jun Cha’s website for $250 USD.

As the Roman Empire collapsed, the plague of Justinian was one of the deadliest pandemics in history that killed tens of millions of people. In the center of Rome stood the ancient tomb and military fortress Castel Sant’Angelo, named after the legend of Archangel Michael appearing above the castle and ending the plague. In scriptures the PROTECTOR is described as a healer of sickness, guardian of warriors and the light in the darkness. In times of adversity he manifests fortitude and courage to those willing to sacrifice themselves for others. Inspired by health care workers fighting COVID-19 around the world, PROTECTOR unleashes Archangel Michael to slay Satan in the war to save humanity. #skidrow #protectangels
