Following the release of champagne flutes and bistro table sets, Balenciaga has now revealed the newest addition to its “Objects” line, a dark metallic Tiger Sculpture appearing just in time for Year of the Tiger Lunar New Year celebrations.
The sculpture was designed by Shanghai-based artist Nik Kosmas, who’s known for provocative multimedia works inspired by sci-fi, fitness, and psychology.
“The Tiger Sculpture’s body appears futuristically mechanical, evoking the efficiency and elegance of industrial engineering as well as the natural grace and precision of living cats,” reads the description from Balenciaga.
The brass objects were welded together entirely by hand, made from individual components that were individually powder-coated, glossed, and shaped using a lost-wax metal casting technique. Displaying meticulous details, the sculptures incorporate a vertebrae-like tail section, gear fittings on the joints, individual whiskers, and a Balenciaga logo engraved on the head.
The Balenciaga Tiger Sculpture in Black is displayed on a 38 x 27 cm platform, and 15 numbered editions will be released worldwide for $33,000 USD. One of the company’s latest offerings features a collaborative BE@RBRICK paying homage to renowned American artists, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The new iteration marks the third collaborative BE@RBRICK focusing on the two artists.
Staying in line with previous BE@RBRICK artist collaborations, the new offering features both the 400% and 100% sizes. With a golden yellow base color, the toy features Basquiat’s signature neo-expressionism and Warhol’s modern art styles. From abstract symbols to block letter words, the collaboration includes an array of colors like coral, burgundy, cerulean blue, black and white. Finishing off the BE@RBRICK is Warhol’s signature and Basquiat’s name with his signature crown on the toy’s back in black and white.
Retailing for $200, the Andy Warhol x Jean-Michel Basquiat BE@RBRICK #3 is available now at HBX.Christie’s recently auctioned off a set of doodle drawings by entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuk and has an upcoming sale in conjunction with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The global auctioneer will introduce another interesting addition when a rare Andy Warhol silkscreen portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat hits the market with an estimated worth of $20m USD.
Jean-Michel Basquiat belongs to avid art collect, Peter Brant, who acquired the work nearly 20 years ago from New York’s Tony Shafrazi gallery. The portrait was created in 1982, perhaps the twilight of Warhol’s career, but just the start of Basquiat’s short yet prolific imprint. The artwork sizes at 40 by 40 inches and features Basquiat face silkscreened with black ink on a metallic orange background with silver splatters made using an oxidation technique that Warhol developed in the late 1970s.
Christie’s chairman of 20th and 21st Century art, Alex Rotter, commended Warhol’s ability to forsee Basquiat’s potential long before others. “His unmatched ability to capture celebrity, fame, glory, and tragedy culminates in this portrait,” Rotter added in a statement.
