A little over a year ago, Jason REVOK invited audiences to stare into his hypnotic assemblages at Library Street Collective. Following suit, the California-born, Detroit-based artist is set to showcase a much larger show at The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) — marking the artist’s first museum solo exhibition.

The Artist’s Instruments continues on a career long exploration into graffiti and mark-making, with an added technological element that reflects the current trajectory that art is going in with the advent of robotics and the digital age.

For this new series, REVOK created several instruments that act as extensions of his body. One of which is a metal frame that assists the artist in creating “frame drags” and “tape loops”, along with his signature “spirograph” patterns across a number of assemblage canvases.

This fusion between human and technology “calls into question the current value system of traditional painting and creates a new frontier for how an artist might practice in the age of machines,” wrote a release by the institution. “In this exhibition, viewers are encouraged to consider how the implicit convergence of labor and imagination has shaped our understanding of arts-based technologies.”

The show is set to open on November 5 and will run through March 25, 2023.
