The UN reported in 2018 that the world produces over 400m tonnes of plastic waste per year. Despite current recycling efforts, up to half of that amount ends up in rivers and oceans which can last for centuries.
In collaboration with Indonesian hospitality brand Potato Head, Futura has unveiled two new Pointman statues to usher a sense of urgency around pollution. The first statue was put on display in Singapore and was made using 4,300 black and white grocery bags that were collected by environmental advocates, Sungai Watch. The second, which is set to open tomorrow, December 6, was constructed using everything from motor oil bottles to discarded water gallon lids sourced by community organization, Yayasan Kakikita and will be displayed at the OMA-designed Potato Head Studios.
Futura’s sculptures are part of OMA and Potato Head’s ongoing collaborative exhibition, “N*thing is Possible”, on view in Singapore until Christmas Day and features work by Kengo Kuma, Max Lamb, Faye Toogood, and more.
In related news, Futura recently worked with Avant Arte to cast Pointman in pristine Carrara marble.
The KAWS:Holiday series has officially resumed touring. Arriving at its ninth stop in Melbourne, Australia, the 42-meter-tall hot-air balloon was spotted soaring through the skies of the city.
Working with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), AllRightsReserved is able to actualize the COMPANION hot-air sculpture over a densely populated urban area for the first time. This also marks the second stop for the COMPANION ever since it was last shown in the U.K. back in 2021.
Speaking on the return of the series, SK Lam, founder of AllRightsReserved commented, “After the journey from land to sea and space, we are excited to take COMPANION to the skies again.”
To celebrate the second hot-air balloon journey of the series, AllRightsReserved invited NIGO to create a special edition KAWS:HOLIDAY jumpsuit. First worn by the pilot during the hot-air balloon journey, the piece boasted elements from NIGO’s Human Made label, along with KAW’s iconic “XX” motif.” The back of the jumpsuit also features an imprint of “KAW’s HOLIDAY” in its signature typeface, while one of the sleeves is adorned with a red and yellow “Australia” badge.
