THE WORLD:

Playboy Suspends Print Magazine edition After 66 Years adult models playmates hugh hefner coronavirus economic difficulties
Playboy has decided to halt its print edition, marking the end of one of the globe’s most-iconic publications. Founded in 1953 by the late Hugh Hefner, the men’s magazine stated on Wednesday that difficulties brought on by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) had increased pre-existing economic challenges.

“Last week, as the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic to content production and the supply chain became clearer and clearer, we were forced to accelerate a conversation we’ve been having internally: the question of how to transform our U.S. print product,” Ben Kohn, CEO of Playboy Enterprises, wrote in a letter. “We have decided that our Spring 2020 Issue, which arrives on U.S. newsstands and as a digital download this week, will be our final printed publication for the year in the U.S.”
The publication will take its content to a “digital first publishing schedule.” Kohn noted that it does not intend to bring back periodicals next year, but the company does plan on publishing an occasional special print edition.

Last year the publication changed to a quarterly print schedule, transitioning content away from the male gaze by reducing nudity and more in an effort to appeal to audiences and adapt with the times. “Over the past 66 years, we’ve become far more than a magazine,” Kohn noted. “And sometimes you have to let go of the past to make room for the future.”

Playboy’s impact on popular culture remains unmatched to this day, seeing the creation of various collaborations alongside the likes of Salvador Dali, Supreme, Anti Social Social Club, NEIGHBORHOOD, BEAMS T, and many more. How the shuddering of Playboy’s periodical will affect its legacy across the cultural milieu remains to be seen, but regardless of the case, marks a stark end to an iconic era.

Dear Printed Matter Community,

We are deeply saddened to announce the cancellation of the 2020 LA Art Book Fair scheduled to take place at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA on April 3-5, 2020. We have been closely monitoring the escalating spread of coronavirus COVID-19 outbreaks in California and globally, and in light of recent news and advisories, it will not be feasible to stage the Fair in a way in which everyone's safety can be assured.

Our annual LA Art Book Fair is both a celebration and a critical platform for artists' books and publishing activity from across the globe. We are grateful for the understanding of our participating artists and publishers, and want to acknowledge the time and effort they have dedicated to developing creative publishing projects for the Fair. We encourage everyone to continue to support their work.

For the full program, and more information about the Fair, browse the 2020 LA Art Book Fair site.
A full list of 2020 LA Art Book Fair exhibitors and links to their websites can be found pmabf.org

We extend our gratitude to our host MOCA for their support, and we also thank our Fair Partners and the many dedicated individuals and vendors who have worked tirelessly toward the production of the 2020 LA Art Book Fair.

The decision to cancel this year's edition of the Fair is an incredibly difficult one, but the health and wellness of our exhibitors and of the public is our main priority. We look forward to a spectacular return to Los Angeles in 2021.

nike phil knight mark parker john donahoe 15 million dollar donation coronavirus covid 19 oregon portland boston tennesseeAs the novel coronavirus continues to lay a heavy burden on the global economy, Nike has officially announced over $15 million USD in donations to help battle the disease’s spread and provide aid to those in need. Even after announcing the temporary closure of many retail locations, the Swoosh is throwing around its substantial financial might — joining other industry stalwarts like rada and Moncler to battle COVID-19.
$10 million US of the sizable sum comes directly from Chairman Emeritus and co-founder Phil Knight and wife Penny, Chairman of the Board Mark and Kathy Parker and president/CEO John and Eileen Donahoe. This is split between several organizations: $7 million USD is going to Oregon Health & Science University, $2 million USD to the Oregon Community Recovery Fund, and $1 million USD to the Oregon Food Bank. Combined, these donations will improve care, testing and access to food for those in need.

Meanwhile, the Nike Foundation — the Swoosh’s charitable arm — has donated $1 million USD to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, which aids efforts by the World Health Organization. It’s also set to donate $1 million USD to the Oregon Community Recovery Fund and $1.1 million to the King Baudouin Foundation to support partners in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Domestically, $250,000 USD will go to the Mid-South Food Bank in Memphis, Tennessee (the home of Nike’s North American shipping operations), $250,000 USD to the Community Foundation of Memphis’s COVID-19 Regional Response Fund, and $500,000 USD to the Boston Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund (home of Nike subsidiary Converse‘s North American headquarters).

Recently, Nike also donated ¥10 million RMB (approximately $1.4 million USD) to China’s Youth Development foundation. This brings the total donations to $15.5 million USD. Finally, the brand has announced that they will support a two-to-one match to any donations that aid areas where Nike employees live. However, it has not been announced exactly what this match entails.
