Over the weekend, Goldin Auctions netted a record-setting $33 million USD single sports memorabilia auction, which included the two 1986 Michael Jordan rookie cards. What pushed the auction to greater heights was the National Treasures Anthony Davis NBA Logoman Rookie Patch Autograph card, which sold for over $1 million USD. At $1,045,500 USD the card joins a small but illustrious group of trading cards that have reached a seven-figure selling price.
The outstanding piece depicts NBA Champion Anthony Davis’s sensational career so far. As the first overall pick of his draft class, and a member of the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers NBA Championship team, the 27-year-old continues to rack up accolades on accolades. Davis is also a seven-time NBA All-Star select, holds the 2017 All-Star MVP Award, as well as an Olympic Gold medal and NCAA Champion. Only mid-career, Davis is expected to be a player to watch throughout the basketball organization and beyond.
The limited-edition, One of One Davis rookie card is graded MINT 9 by BGS with the signature is graded a 10 by Beckett. The “Logoman” NBA patch dominating the right side of the card is taken from a worn, Davis jersey. On the left, is the athlete’s autograph in large, confident blue ink. The signature includes Davis’s jersey-number inscription, “23”, making this card and signage truly unique. Panini America Inc. is stated on the back of the card, speaking to its authenticity and genuineness. After a month, the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card officially has a new record price. Just this past weekend, two cards appeared on the market, both identical with a Gem Mint PSA 10 grading, selling at $738,000 USD each at Goldin Auctions.
Though record-setting prices have been a norm in the trading card realm lately, it is the level of the surge that is most notable with the Michael Jordan cards. The card has jumped more than $500K USD from less than a month ago. A recent PSA 10 Jordan rookie card only went for $217,000 USD on January 3, while another closed at $211,560 USD back in December 2020. In December 2019, the same card, the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card would have only been worth around $32,000 USD.
Over the years, more than 18,000 Michael Jordan rookie cards have been submitted into PSA, however, there are only currently 316 cards that have received a Gem Mint 10 grading. To put it into perspective, 11,500 copies of the specific Chicago Bullsrookie card has been sent to Beckett Grading. Amongst those, only six received the pristine 10 grading.
It is important to mention that it is especially tough for the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball cards to receive a perfect 10 grading due to its major issue with centering. Its red corners are also extra susceptible to damage.Tom Brady‘s autographed New England Patriots rookie card, also known as the 2000 Playoff Contenders Brady rookie card was listed and sold on PWCC Marketplace for $555,988 USD on Monday.
When this Brady card hit the market in 2012, it was only valued at $5,000 USD and fetched almost ten times the amount in February 2018. The rookie card has a PSA 10 GEM MINT condition rating, making this one of the newest Brady cards to ever hit the market.
The card did not possess any visual scuffs, scratches nor imperfections. This is especially surprising since this card is rarely found in its best condition. It appears that the current copy’s all four corners are “uniformly untouched with the fragile periphery being entirely clean…Furthermore, one of the most difficult aspects of this card, the autograph is seemingly pristine and brilliantly penned in black ink.”
PWCC describes this card as “the single most important modern football card ever produced,” evidently speaking to the steep price tag that comes with the value of the card.
Though it costs a small fortune, the price of the card is not expected to drop any time soon. Being that Brady is just one win away from his seventh Super Bowl ring, and widely known as one of the top quarterbacks of all time, the value of the card will only increase from here. The latest NBA star to hit the trading card market is Zion Williamson with his 2019 rookie card, expected to reach at least $750,000 USD at Goldin Auctions’ in January.
Set to auction is the one-of-one Zion Williamson Panini Flawless Logoman, graded with a PSA Mint 9. In its superb condition, the New Orleans Pelicans‘ former rookie’s card was amongst a $6,700 USD pack, opened on December 23, 2020. Over the course of his two seasons in the NBA, Williamson’s basketball card value has skyrocketed exponentially. Just recently, another Williamson card sold just shy of a six-figure price. The card in mention was a particularly rare Williamson card and sold for $99,800 USD even though he had only played 19 games in the NBA at the time of the sale in June 2020.
At age 20, and with just one year in the NBA under his belt, Williamson averaged 22.4 points at 57.2% shooting, 6.9 rebounds and 2 assists per game in his first 27 games in the league. It is expected that as Williamson continues to produce similar or greater results than his present stats, the prices of his rare trading cards will only continue to climb over time.
The one-of-one Zion Williamson Flawless Rookie Card opens for bidding on January 11, 2020, at Goldin Auctions.
