Sotheby’s is set to auction off the late David Bowie’s personal art collection that features works from iconic artists such as Henry Moore, Frank Auerbach, Damien Hirst, Marcel Duchamp and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Alongside the acclaimed paintings are vibrant, postmodern furnishings created by world-renowned design and architecture firm, the Memphis Group founded by Ettore Sottsass. Peter Shire, an MG designer who conjured a slew of products in Bowie’s collection told GQ that the furniture “came out of some very important reactions and rebellions to the evolution of design from the ’50s to the ’60s to the ’70s that came to a head in 1979 and ’80. It was a pimple that had to be popped!” All in all, the pieces cull radical design influences that is reminiscent of Ziggy Stardust’s revolutionizing music.
