Fujifilm has recently launched the new instax SQUARE SQ1, a modern and functional instant cameraperfect for those who are new to analog photography. I have always loved capturing all my favorite moments on film — the old-school way, with no editing, Facetune or filters. There’s just something special and authentic about candid images that don’t require a lot of effort or fancy equipment to shoot. I used to own the instax mini 8, so when I came across Fujifilm’s latest analog instant print model, I was intrigued by its user-friendly claim and knew I had to test it out for myself.
Read on for my honest review of the camera and why it makes a great gift for the photography enthusiast in your life.
Features
Arriving in a square shape, the instax SQUARE SQ1 isn’t as heavy as it may seem. The plastic exterior features a soft matte-like texture, allowing you to easily grip onto the camera without having to worry about dropping it. Some of the camera’s key features include automatic exposure — it senses the level of ambient light when you press the shutter button. Additionally, it optimizes the shutter speed and flash output according to the lighting conditions of the environment you are in.
For those who love taking selfies, the SQUARE SQ1 has a one-touch selfie mode, offering the best possible focus and exposure for your photos. To activate this function, all you have to do is switch the retractable lens from “On” to “Selfie” mode, look at the mirror on the front of the lens and click away.
In terms of colorways, the instax SQUARE SQ1 is available in three different options: the vibrant “Terracotta Orange,” pastel “Glacier Blue” and minimalist “Chalk White.”
Photo Quality and User Experience
Compatible with Fujifilm’s instax SQUARE films, the SQUARE SQ1 develops your images in approximately 90 seconds, making the camera ideal even for the most impatient among us.
I found that photographing subjects outdoors in sunny conditions was when I got my best shots. At times, the flash could be a bit too harsh for indoor environments. One thing I also noticed was that the viewfinder isn’t exactly true to the actual frame when using the “On” mode. So when my first image developed (the third image in the gallery above), my model was slightly cut out of the frame.
Nevertheless, the point-and-shoot was able to deliver sharp and vibrant stills of subjects — whether it be colorful murals, flowers or sneakers — that weren’t exposed to harsh light. If you’re looking to take more detailed shots, I suggest using the selfie mode to produce clearer images. All in all, the SQUARE SQ1 is easy enough to use, making the model a great gift option for those who like to document their memories the fun, old-fashioned way.
