ART: Takashi Murakami’s ‘Superflat’ Self-Portrait Gets Flayed in Brand New Sculpture / Medicom Unveils New ‘Star Wars’ Themed BE@RBRICKs

Takashi Murakami Self-Portrait Sculpture Tetsuya Tomonai Flayed Vinyl Toy Collectible Figure - 3910183
Takashi Murakami has recently taken to Instagram to post photos of a brand new sculpture. It took Japanese artist Tetsuya Tamanoi over a year to complete the dissected piece which centers upon Murakami’s iconic Superflat self-portrait. The unpainted sculpture has striking similarities to KAWS’ flayed iterations of his beloved Companion vinyl toys. There is no word yet on whether or not the figure will hit store shelves, but stay tuned for more details as they crawl.

Japanese toy manufacturer Medicom Toy has announced that the latest additions to its BE@RBRICK lineup will feature four new Star Wars themed figures. Made for the upcoming Medicom Toy Exhibition on August 5, the new set will see C-3PO remade as one of the brand’s signature figures, as well as a new Darth Vader silhouette based on his model from Rogue One. The collection will also see two specialist classes of Stormtroopers remade into the bear-like figures, as the “Shoretrooper” and “Deathtrooper” models are also going to be made in honor of the exhibition.
Depending on size and model, the new Star Wars inspired Medicom Toy BE@RBRICKs range in price from ¥1,500 (about $14 USD) to ¥49,000 (about $440 USD). Head over to Medicom’s web store to see the full price list and to place your pre-order.
