NEW ART:

daniel arsham quartz eroded vogue magazine artworks sculptures auctions sales contemporary art
This past June, Daniel Arsham took to his Instagram account to unveil a series of sculptures portraying eroded magazine publications. One of the more standout pieces was his version of a Vogue issue crafted using quartz, selenite, and hydrostone materials. Sized roughly at 47 7/8 x 36 1/2 inches, the three-dimensional artwork was recently sold at a Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art auction in Hong Kong. The final hammer price for the work was 2.3 million HKD (approx. $ 200k USD).
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to the HOCA Foundation to support the institute’s future initiatives and help the “foundation democratize art and enrich the cultural life of Hong Kong,” as per HOCA in a statement. In addition to Arsham’s sculptural pieces, other participating artists who have donated works directly for the benefit auction include Futura, José Parlá, Felipe Pantone, Cleon Peterson, VHILS, Shepard Fairey, and Erik Parker.

Last year, maharishi partnered with legendary graffiti writer TEACH for a “Yeah of the Pig” capsule collection that launched alongside the British artist’s “They Taste Yeah Yeah” exhibition. The duo are teaming up again for a limited edition print, entitled ‘Each One Teach One.’
The hand-screen printed artwork features TEACH’s signature script in contrasting blue, red and white colors. The words, emboldened by a thick black outline and surrounded by paint-like drips, give the 420 x 594 mm print a sense of depth. maharishi explains the importance of its ongoing collaborations with the graffiti artist: “TEACH, who has been active since the ’90s and a member of London’s infamous DDS crew, the Kings of the London Underground, has influenced a whole generation of younger writers from his ethos on the culture to his hand style, throw-up’s, trains and consistency.”
Available in an edition of 30, TEACH’s ‘Each One Teach One’ print is available to purchase now for £75 (approx. $95 USD) on maharishi’s website and at its store location in London. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Multimedia artist Dean Stockton aka D*Face and celebrated visual artist Ron English are collaborating with Made by Monsters for a 15-inch sculpture. Merging D*Face’s iconic D*Dog character with English’s Grin Skull, the resulting sculpture showcases both artists’ street art inspirations and pop-surrealist style.
While the D*Dog-inspired silhouette is plastered with an eerie expression, the painted gold and silver exterior gives it a luxe finish. A translucent pole mounts the vinyl figure onto a metal pyramid base, creating the impression that the figure hovers in the air.
Take a look at the collaborative edition in the gallery above. Limited to 250 pieces, each sculpture will retail for $250 USD. A limited pre-release will take place at DesignerCon 2019 from November 22 to 24 at 3D Retro Booth #1905. D*Face will be available to sign the sculptures over the duration of the convention at select times.

ART: RAE Explores Societal Despair & Uncertainty With "These Daze" Exhibition

Brooklyn-based street artist RAE is holding his latest body of work, entitled “These Daze,” at a pop-up exhibition in New York City. His paintings and found-object sculptures are mostly made from plastic waste, exploring the idea that being apart of society today means “accepting the fact that things unwanted will inevitably find their way into our internal systems.” Channeling this feeling of despair and chaos into his work, RAE searches for answers concerning class structure, marginalization, and patriotism through frenetic, mixed-media works.
RAE represents a visual “melting pot” in his paintings, contrasting shiny and matte colors and building up the canvases with enamel, gold leaf and ink. He imbues the work with muted tones — keeping in line with some of his more somber themes — and represents the current state of societal flux and uncertainty with a variation of bold and unsteady lines. Figures recede into a “dazed” blur, marking a separation from this world through societal division and compartmentalization.
For his three-dimensional pieces, RAE collects discarded items from the streets, such as dice, shopping bags, and jewelry, to reflect today’s “throwaway culture.” While these items have little purpose after they are disposed of, they tell the stories of people’s dreams, desires, impulses, and struggles. Using hundreds of tiny nails, RAE constructs his sculptural works by pounding metal, melting plastic and assembling the pieces into a cohesive piece. From “plastics to politics,” the artist returns to the same question: “How do we rise above it all?”
Take a look at select works from the exhibition in the gallery above. “These Daze” will be on view to the public from now until December 11.

The Red Bull Illume Image Quest competition is one of the most illustrious competitions for photographers specializing in action sports. This year, 60 finalist images were selected from a record-breaking 59,551 images submitted. Category winners were then selected and announced during an event at the LUMEN Museum in Italy where all 60 finalist images were placed on view. It took a panel of 50 photo editors and digital experts to review the original batch of 59,551 images. Categories included Best of Instagram by SanDisk, Innovation by Sony, Lifestyle, Moving Image, Masterpiece and more.
Ben Thouard ended up taking home the Overall Winner honor for his captivating underwater photo of athlete Ace Buchan while he surfed in Teahupo’o.
“I’ve dedicated the last few years to shooting underwater, looking for new angles and a new way to shoot surfing and waves,” says Thouard of his work. “Tahiti has some of the clearest water in the world. This photo was shot during a free surf session right before the WCT event in Teahupo‘o. This is Ace Buchan kicking out from the barrel through the wave, a technique to escape a close-out wave. Luckily I was right below, breathless with my waterhousing waiting for this moment.”
View at select winning images above, then head over to Red Bull Illume’s website to learn more about the contest and this year’s winners. Those looking to take a piece of the action home can purchase Red Bull Illume’s 2019 Photobook, which features a 260 of the top images submitted to this year’s competition.
