Alpina Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date / OMEGA Unveils its Seamaster Aqua Terra for James Bond in 'Spectre' / Swatch Unveils a New Range of Sistem51 Watches
New from Alpina is the watchmaker’s latest Startimer: the Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date. Highlighted by a newly redesigned dial — executed here in a reflective black with luminous indexes — the chronograph features a 44mm stainless steel case with a polished bezel and brushed lugs. The dial’s black is then juxtaposed with shimmering white chronograph registers as running seconds are situated at 6 o’clock, minutes at 9 o’clock, and 1/10th of a second intervals at 3 o’clock. Finally, a large date window appears at the 6 o’clock position.
Powered by a AL-372 Swiss quartz movement, water-resistant up to 100 meters, and packing a power reserve that will last roughly 4 years, the Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date will soon be available at select dealers.
With Daniel Craig set to reprise his role as 007 in the upcoming Spectre, OMEGA has revealed the timepiece James Bond will don in his 24th outing: a special take on the Seamaster Aqua Terra. Limited to 15,007 production models, 007′s latest watch features a 41.5mm steel case and employs OMEGA’s calibre 8507 automatic movement, anti-magnetic technology, and is water-resistant up to depths of 150 meters. Finished with sapphire crystal at both the front and rear of the case, the unique design even sports a dial with a motif inspired by the Bond family’s own coat of arms.
Though pricing and exact availability have yet to be announced, the Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial 15,007 Gauss will likely launch in conjunction with the release of the film later this year. Spectre, which stars Christoph Waltz as villain Oberhause — is set to hit theaters November 6.
For watch enthusiasts, movement is a big deal. And while quartz movements are used in the vast majority of watches you see today, mechanical movement still remains the holy grail of timepieces. However, the steep cost of entry for mechanical watches - due to the incredibly complex nature of building one – made them all but unobtainable for most people. Swatch changed all of that when they created the Sistem51, the first mechanical watch assembled using a fully automated process. Swatch’s innovative new design reduced the vast number of components usually required for a mechanical watch down to just 51, allowing it to be mass-produced and sold for an unheard of price of $150. And now, for the first time since it was introduced in 2013, Swatch is releasing five new designs for its revolutionary mechanical watch. The new Sistem51 models feature bold colorways in fushia and teal, along with new face designs that offer more classic looks compared to the original Sistem51’s uniquely abstract style. Pricing remains unchanged at $150 USD when they go on sale February 23. If you’ve been looking to add a mechanical timepiece to your collection, Swatch is making sure your timing couldn’t be better.
