FRESH KICKS COLLABS:

As the first month of 2019 wraps up, it seems collaborations — in the same vein as 2018 — will still play an essential role for Nike. Established models are given a fresh update, while at the same time, completely new silhouettes are joining the extensive annals of the brand. Brands and designers from Cav Empt to Jerry Lorenzo to Martine Rose are bringing their distinct design perspectives to the Swoosh Brand. Delving into the slew of releases dropped this month, HYPEBEAST has teamed up with GOAT to provide you with a recap of the first round of partnerships for the year.

Cav Empt x Nike Air Max 95 “Blackened Blue”

Release Date: January 10, 2019

Helmed by Sk8thing and Toby Feltwell, the Japanese label Cav Empt imbued its notable design language into its inaugural collection with the Swoosh brand. Style trends that originated in London but which also influenced a Japanese audience seemingly provided the ethos for the assemblage. The Air Max 95, donning a full leather upper with an all-over digi-camo print, was complemented by a capsule of garments and accessories.

Martine Rose x Nike Air Monarch IV “Soft Pink”

Martine Rose, of the eponymously named label, brought a unique twist to way “drops” are presented. Craigslist, or “the digital wild west,” became the first home for her partnership with the Swoosh brand. Taking inspiration from what she described as quintessentially British and Middle American, the complete collection sits as an extension of her personality and childhood experiences. In a way, it’s almost characteristically mundane while possessing what she states is a “mold-breaking” quality.

Nike Air Fear of God 1 “Light Bone”

Its initial emergence within the sneaker community stirred a palpable amount of excitement. Having been handed the reins by Nike, Jerry Lorenzo created a model that fits in with the aesthetics of his imprint and his love for basketball. This minimalistic display of design was not only intended to entice the tastes of fashion enthusiasts but, as well, provide athletes with a performance-ready sneaker for the courts.

Nike Fear of God “Shoot Around” in “Light Bone”

Release Date: January 19, 2019

Tailing the fanfare created from his first drop, the “Shoot Around” brought together details witnessed in the FOG 1 with its own distinct characteristics. The upper, although now at ankle level, and midsole doesn’t1 waver much in conception from his inaugural offering. New design touches appear through the newly implemented vinyl Swooshes, and rather than crawling across the tongue, the laces wrap around the ankle and are kept in place by a plastic toggle. To further secure the shoes to your feet, a strap above the laces provides extra support.

Nike SB Dunk Low “Panda Pigeon”

Release Date: January 15, 2019

Jeff Staple connected again with Nike to drop another successor to his, now infamous, “Pigeon” Dunk. This time, his Chinese heritage was on full display, as the iteration’s color palette mimics that of a panda. A bold green accent adds a bit contrast to the neutral tones, while his titular pigeon emblem nods to his label. Rounding out the kicks, an icy sole, bearing newspaper clippings from the pandemonium created from his first infamous offering with Nike SB, alludes to his past with the brand.

Nike PG 3 “NASA”

The interstellar exploits of NASA are tapped for the latest iteration of Paul George’s third signature shoe with Nike. A spacesuit-esque palette is used for the model’s color inspiration, as a vibrant orange swathes the knitted upper. Acting as accents, metallic silver and black are included alongside blue and red on the medial and lateral lace straps. Completing the offering, an ornamental red “REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT” tag has been included alongside patches on the tongue and heel.

NikeCourt Zoom Vapor X “Kyrie 5”

Crossing the lines of basketball and tennis, the collaborative silhouette pays homage to two Australian athletes – Kyrie Irving and Nick Kyrgios: The Kyrie 5’s upper is paired with a VaporX outsole. Black and a bold orange acts as an accent to a dominant white hue that splays across the shoe. Trademark branding, such as Kyrie’s signature emblem, are included to complete the hybrid.

Shortly after a first look, we now have a closer look at the Emotionally Unavailable x Nike Air Force 1 High “Valentine’s Day.”

Fitting the theme of V-Day, label heads Edison Chen and KB Lee dressed the high-top iteration of the classic Nike model in a bright and bold red canvas. The uppers of the shoe are decorated with pink chenille Swooshes framed by white rope laces weaved through the eyelets and a zipper shroud closure. Under the shroud is an additional tongue with “E.U. Air” text and a melting red heart tag. Rounding up the design of the collaboration is an “E.U. Air” cream-colored ankle strap and a vintage white midsole that’s paired with a red rubber outsole.

SPORTSWEAR: FRANKIE / SELENA

Frankie Collective has teased a new Supreme dress with all the logos your heart can desire. The reworked piece is crafted from a stretchy material that extends up into a flattering mock neck. It is tailored to fit the curves of the body hitting the thigh area. Supreme’s text logo is run along the sleeves in white adding a classic streetwear accent. PUMA‘s sleek Cali sneaker debuted last year in classic, monochromatic shades but now Selena Gomez treats us to an all-new pastel colorway. This time, the silhouette is coated in a dusky lilac “Elderberry” hue that sweeps right across the upper. Tonal details are ever-present throughout, with the Formstripe on the sidewall and metallic laces adding to the look.

Adding a subtle but stylish contrast are the glossy patent panels which land on the heel and side, as well as the metallic gold PUMA branding that sits on the side and heel. To complete, there’s a slightly-raised platform midsole with vertical column detailing and light purple PUMA text on the heel.
