Nike and Fear of God are gearing up to release their collaborative Spring/Summer 2019 collection. Leading the range is Fear of God x Nike’s Air Raid sneaker, a sleek unisex design. The silhouette is set to debut in two iterations, one “Light Bone” colorway, and the other in “Black” with white detailing. Launching alongside the aforementioned trainers is a Nike Air Fear of God Moc shoe, a double-hooded sweatshirt, a new T-shirt and revamps of the FOG x Nike collaborative short and pant.
In an official press statement, designer Jerry Lorenzo shares that he originally was introduced to Nike’s Air Raid design in high school. After seeing them, he immediately wanted a pair. He recalls being really into the grey and black color scheme and the geometric design details. Fast forward to 1998, during his tutelage at his alma mater Florida A&M University (FAMU) Lorenzo, shared one moment at homecoming that year sparked his interest in making a cultural impact.
During the half-time battle of the bands, FAMU’s world-renowned band played a portion of a track from OutKast‘s Aquemini album after students felt a bit defeated. In the press release he went on to share:
“It was the emotion of that feeling, the soul of that feeling — watching the stadium being rocked side to side that serves as a measuring stick of what I’m trying to do emotionally every time through product.”
The Fear of God x Nike SS19 collection showcases Lorenzo’s dedication to launching designs with a poignant story behind them. Starring in the campaign is WNBA player Diamond DeShields of the Chicago Sky. As a whole, the capsule showcases the relationship between the African American community and luxury streetwear.
