Prior to his passing, MF DOOM collaborated with online auction platform Illust Spaceto create his first collection of digital art. These collaborative works take the form of augmented reality pieces shaped like the creative masks that MF DOOM was known for wearing. Powered by blockchain or NFTs, these decentralized works of art are also the only signed models from MF DOOM that currently exist in the market. Now, Illust Space is offering fans the opportunity to own these pieces.
Unlike other NFT platforms, Illust Space allows collectors and artists to display their art in the real world by using geoplacement and web AR. For the masks created with MF DOOM, owners can bring the masks into the physical through augmented reality or “wear” the mask by using the face tracking library on the Illust Space platform. The auction will include a special piece entitled Black Sludge that was minted in Daniel Dumile’s wallet, which is currently in the custody of his wife Jasmine. Similar to how a rare coin contains imperfect flaws that increases its desirability, Black Sludge contains 3D blemishes when the first set of NFT models were being set up in AR. The Illust Space team has shared that some of the data relating to textures were lost, which led to a unique final product.
After a successful auction in October with signed MF DOOM masks, Illust Space is organizing this auction for the last “signed” MF DOOM mask, which was created before his passing. Other collectors will be reselling masks they purchased from the first auction. Since the assets in this auction are powered by NFTs, all artworks will have royalties baked into them. These royalties are currently in possession of MF DOOM’s family. In this marketplace, any mask owners who are selling previously purchased pieces will be donating a portion of revenues to the family on top of the included royalty and Illust Space will also be waiving a significant portion of its platform fees.
The upcoming auction with MF DOOM on Illust Space will begin on March 11 at 4PM PST and will run for 30 hours. Head over to Illust Space’s website to learn more about the auction as well as the platform’s upcoming programs with artists like Max Cooper, Benedict Radcliffe and other exciting creative collaborators.Lu Yang is the rising Chinese multimedia artist who specializes in creating dynamic compositions that merge the worlds of anime, video games and science-fiction. Yang’s work has been shown in major exhibitions at the UCCA, Centre Pompidou, ICA London, Musée d’art Contemporain Lyon, Momentum Berlin, and will be included in the Asia Society NY Art Triennial this year.
The artist is partnering up with SHDW.gallery to release a selection of limited edition prints under a series entitled Material World Knight. A total of eight prints are included in the collaboration portraying various futuristic avatars set against techno-psychedelic backdrops.
The first print in the series spotlights the artist’s first character called UTERUS MANwhich will release on March 16 at SHDW.gallery’s website. Each print will arrive hand-signed, numbered and limited to an edition of 50 pieces.Fans can officially own a piece of MF DOOM‘s legacy in the form of one-off art pieces. Just recently, Illust Space announced an official partnership with Rhymesayers Entertainment and Jasmine Dumile, DOOM’s wife to auction off a series of signed, augmented reality MF DOOM masks. Hopping on the non-fungible tokens trend, these masks will be offered as NFTs themselves.
NFTs have become the latest trend for many entertainers. Just recently, Christie’sauction house closed on a crypto art by rising digital artist, Beeple, for an unprecedented $69.3 million USD. Earlier this month, Grimes’ digital art seriesthrough NFT sold for an equivalent of $6 million USD. With NFTs, digital contracts are assigned to people to determine the rights to digital artworks, collectibles and other unique items. For instance, with each MF DOOM mask, or NFT, the item can be sold, purchased or traded like any other physical object on the digital sphere.
Illust Space’s CCO, Tim Prochak said to Decrypt, “We are living in this ubiquitous digital layer now. We don’t quite realize it, but if you look at the numbers of people using augmented reality every day, this is happening.”
Shortly before his death in October 2020, MF DOOM mentioned the concept to some of his fans. When the first edition of the augmented reality masks came out, they were an instant hit. Now his wife is planning on relaunching the idea to pay tribute to her late husband.
The auction for the AR MF DOOM masks ends March 10, 10 p.m. PST and are expected to go between $15,000 to $75,000 USD. 10 percent of the proceeds will go back to MF DOOM’s estate as royalties to fund any future projects.
Los Angeles-based artist Victor Solomon is releasing a NFT artwork based on an original sculpture of his signature etched crystal basketball. The physical object was made for his “Literally Balling” project — an ongoing series that features various icons and totems from the culture and world of basketball. The crypto artwork, entitled MoonShotVS1.NFT, is a digital reimagining of the sculpture rendered in a continuous, three-dimensional loop.“Throughout Literally Balling’s journey, recurring limited edition sculptural releases have provided opportunities for collectors to participate in the conversation between art and sport and feel a sense of ownership in the project,” said Victor Solomon to HYPEBEAST. “Today, as an opportunity for us to contribute to the rapidly evolving NFT market, we’re proud to announce our first digital release: MoonShotVS.1.NFT.”
The MoonShot.VS1.NFT digital collectible is available exclusively on OpenSea’s platform in auction format, with bidding open until March 17 at 12 a.m. PST.After Christie’s announced its plans to auction off a work of crypto art by the rising digital artist, Mike Winkelmann aka Beeple, in an online sale two weeks ago, the attraction surrounding non-fungible tokens has escalated immensely. Beeple’s NFT artwork entitled The First 5,000 Days is comprised of 5,000 images that the artist made over a 13-year period. The 10-day auction came to a close this Thursday morning with the artist fetching an unprecedented $69.3 Million USD sale price.
As per Christie’s, the sale drew an unexpected frequency of bidding that elevated the price of Beeple’s NFT to the millions mark despite the price of work starting at just $100 USD with no pre-sale estimates considering it’s a new form of art with various implications. Bloomberg reported that the buyer is Justin Sun, founder of cryptocurrency platform Tron.
This past Friday, bidding was at $4 million USD. A few days later it was up to $9.75 million USD and by this Thursday morning it had surged to $14.75 million USD. In the last few minutes of the sale, bids rose to $50 million USD and then the record-smashing hammer price of $60 million USD. According to the auction house, 55 percent of the bidders were based stateside, 27 percent in Europe and 18 percent in Asia, with 64 percent of those participants in the Millennial and Gen Z age groups.
“Artists have been using hardware and software to create artwork and distribute it on the internet for the last 20+ years but there was never a real way to truly own and collect it. With NFT’s that has now changed. I believe we are witnessing the beginning of the next chapter in art history, digital art. This is work that has just as much craft, message, nuance and intent as anything made on a physical canvas and I am beyond honored and humbled to represent the digital art community in this historic moment,” said Beeple in a statement.
Another work by Beeple sold for $6.6 million USD through Nifty Gateway at the end of February. At the time, it was the most expensive digital work ever auctioned. Head to Christie’s website to learn more and stay tuned for more NFT-related news on HYPEBEAST.
