As we head into 2018, TIME magazine releases its annual “Top 10 Photos of 2017” feature. The editorial represents a finished inquiry into TIME‘s extensive photo archives for the most powerful visual expressions of humanity documented this year. On the final selection, the publication writes,
These pictures were chosen not just for the information they provide and the emotions they evoke, but for their staying power: their ability to not just define the year we leave behind but to inform the one ahead.
The 10 photos capture the human condition, natural disasters, violent tragedies and other moments for which words are insufficient. In one photo, we become aware of our providence through a boy desperately crying out for food from an aid truck in India. In another, a polar bear is starving in the dissipating Arctic. Others are heavy reminders of events such as the Harvest Festival shooting. Included in the piece is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie enjoying the beach with his family despite implementing a state-wide shutdown of public beaches. Further, within the article, the photographers of each image provide a reflection bearing witness to the moment they captured.
Take a look at the photos above and let us know which ones left a sustained impression. To read the full work, visit TIME.com.
