The skater talks quintessential Dior style and her favorite moment in the maison’s history.

It’s rare to see Briana King stepping out without a skateboard, but the Californian multi-hyphenate made the exception on Wednesday evening, trading her deck for the Lady Dior bag as she attended the exhibition opening for Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at New York‘s Brooklyn Museum.

The star-studded inauguration marked the exhibition’s North American debut, following previous iterations of the show in ShanghaiParis and London. The Brooklyn Museum exhibit, curated by art and fashion historian Florence Müller in collaboration with Matthew Yokobosky, showcases creations by Dior‘s Artistic Directors throughout the years — including Yves Saint Laurent, John GallianoRaf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri — with reference to art history.

In attendance of the cocktail event were Yara ShahidiLorde and A$AP Ferg, whose snapshot with King is included in a photo diary she shared with HYPEBAE. Accompanied by her friend, fellow skater and model Stephanie Wise, King arrived at the exhibition in a sleek outfit reflective of her cozy, effortless style. To complement her handbag, she paired a red plaid coat from Dior’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection with a cropped cardigan and cream white knit pants by LA label Knorts. Adding a final touch to her punk rock-leaning ensemble, King accessorized with stacking chains in silver and gold.

Look inside King’s getting ready session, and read our conversation about her favorite Dior moments and designs, below.

Tell us about the look you wore to the opening of the Dior exhibition. What’s the vibe of your outfit?

Textures on textures on textures. The vibe of my fit is always my vibe of what’s inside — we feeling bold.

What were you looking forward to most about the exhibit?

I really looked forward to seeing Deon who shot my last piece for Dior. It’s an amazing experience to go through Dior’s exhibit with somebody that has the same amount of love and admiration for Dior. Family things.

How would you describe the quintessential Dior style?

Femininity. Currently with my circle of the girls, gays and theys. Genderless.

You have a knack of mixing and matching skate clothing with designer pieces. How does your love of skateboarding influence your fashion choices?

My skateboard has brought me to a place of happiness I thought was only imaginable. I need my outfits to match that energy, and it just so happened that my energy is calling designer [laughs]. So to make it simple, I just wear what I love. And I’m a skateboarder, so I’m wearing it while I skate.

As a friend of the House, what would you say is your favorite Dior moment in its long, great history?

Dior’s Air Jordan 1 Retro High. I’m known for skating in Jordans, so it was legendary when that collaboration happened. Where’s my pair at Dior?!

What’s your most treasured Dior item in your wardrobe? Is there a story behind it?

I know it’s such a random piece to treasure, but [it would have to be] my Toile de Jouy Reverse towel. She’s been with me to Greece, chilling on the boat, and to the lake in Copenhagen. She just holds so many memories. I’m such a sentimental person — I always obsess over the most simple things in my life, because you’re no longer looking at it as an extravagant piece. It’s a simple piece with extravagant memories.
