Emerging artist Bianca Nemlec is set to bring her new show The Earth That Birthed You to London‘s Ojiri Gallery in Shoreditch.

Drawing inspiration from flora and fauna, the exhibition comprises Nemlec’s natural works, depicting scenes of ecosystems fuelled by birds, flowers, rivers and insects. According to the artist, “This body of work is an exploration of these ecosystems in relationship with the brown figure. I pay homage to lands far and near through my imagined world — a moment of relaxation with a Scarlet Ibis or playful tumbles with Heliconias. The act of painting these scenes is a way to acknowledge my connection to both where I stand and where my families come from.”

Delving into her creative process, Nemlec explains that for this particular series, “A new experimental element was also added, soft brown washes that create the backdrop of each painting which allowed me as the artist a moment of meditation through gestural strokes, and ode to the element of water coming through in a new way in my paintings.”

Speaking about the title of the show, the artist notes that “The Earth That Birthed You highlights the idea that we are all connected to the land, and ancestral homelands are also part of the story of one’s birth and lineage, and so, to bridge those connections is an act of getting to know oneself in a deeper way.”
