An expansive exhibition of artworks by the late American Pop artist James Rosenquist, entitled “Painting as Immersion,” will be on display at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark. More than fifty pieces will be presented, including never-before-shown collages and archival works from the late-’50s to ’60s that exemplify the artist’s signature advertising aesthetic and monumental formats. This will be the largest Rosenquist exhibition in Europe to date.

James Rosenquist was a billboard painter-turned artist who was instrumental in establishing the Pop art movement alongside fellow icons Andy Warhol and Roy-Lichtenstein. Rosenquist’s massive surrealist works are known for collaging contrasting subject matters into fragmented images that echoed advertising visuals and tapped into the relationship between science and aesthetics. His commercial-tinged artworks spoke on America’s booming consumer culture during the ’60s and its connected economic, political and social issues.

pablo picasso le marin christies auction may sale art artwork
Following his “Face-Off” exhibition with Condo, the late Pablo Picasso continues to make waves in the art market. Produced in 1943 during the Nazi invasion of France, Pablo Picasso’s monumental Le Marin painting will soon go under the hammer at Christie’s upcoming Impressionist and Modern Art sale. The auction house claims that the 52 by 31-inch piece is a self-portrait of the Spanish painter, portraying a male figure resting his head on his right hand. Collectively, the painting was initially sold at auction 21 years ago from the extensive collection of elite New York City collectors, Victor and Sally Ganz.

Christie’s is estimating that Le Marin will fetch around $70 million USD at the sale this May 15. Check out the painting above and visit Christie’s official website to learn more. In recent art news, Yoshitomo Nara launched a new exhibition at Pace Gallery.
