The Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, has unveiled a poignant exhibition honoring the life of Breonna Taylor, a Black 26-year-old healthcare worker who was shot and killed by police in March 2020. Curated in close collaboration with Taylor’s family, Promise, Witness, Remembrance is comprised entirely of work by Black artists including Amy Sherald, Nick Cave and Hank Willis Thomas.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: Promise explores American ideals and the country’s failure to live up to them, while Witness focuses on political resistance and the Black Lives Matter protests that Taylor’s death sparked. Lastly, Remembrance is a tribute of sorts, honoring Taylor with pieces including Sherald’s portrait of the aspiring nurse, which was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair.
Promise, Witness, Remembrance is on view at the Speed Art Museum through June 6, 2021. The exhibition is free to visit.
