Winners of the 2018 Underwater Photographer of the Year competition have just been announced. A panel of expert judges rummaged through 5,000 entries to crown the international victors spanning 11 photography categories. Taking home the grand prize is German photographer Tobias Friedrich for his remarkable “Cycle War,” portraying an underwater wreckage of World War II motorcycles, supply trucks, and armies of soldierfish swarming the entire frame of the photo.
Check it out in the Instagram photo, below.
“I had had this image in mind for a few years, but it is impossible to capture in one photo because there is no space inside the wreck to photograph this scene in a single frame,” Friedrich explained to UPY. “My solution was to take a series pictures and stitch them together as a panorama.”
