Brighton-based contemporary artist Helen Beard will host her largest solo exhibition at Unit London starting in September. “It’s Her Factory” will showcase large-scale paintings and the artist’s first sculptural piece. With this presentation, Beard challenges contemporary ideas of sexuality and examines the individual’s agency in controlling their own bodies.
“It’s Her Factory” creates an openness surrounding all types of sexualities, including imagery of queer intimacy through vibrant color-blocking. She documents sexual acts that are ordinarily censored from media in order to emphasize the individual’s authority over their own bodies. Bright colors flow throughout the figures, creating connections between the bodies and the pleasure gained from engaging in such intimate acts. The exhibition focuses on female empowerment and self-pleasure, reclaiming depictions of the body from a haunting male gaze.
Last year, she was included in Unit London’s critically-acclaimed group exhibition, “21st Century Women,” and exhibited “True Colours” at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery.
“It’s Her Factory” will be on show from September 7 to October 6 at Unit London Gallery.
Elsewhere in the art world, Takahiro Komuro launched a new exhibition at Ginza Tsutsaya Books Atrium in Japan.
