NEW WATCHES: Luminox Launches 25th Anniversary Watch Series / Rolex 2015 Oyster Perpetual / TAG Heuer Monaco V4 Phantom / Omega Unveils the New Speedmaster '57 / Patek Philippe Introduces the 5524G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Swiss watch company Luminox is launching a series of high performance watches that’s comprised of updated classics and new models. All of the watches share the brand’s signature self-powered illumination system that’s marketed as glowing in any light condition and for up to 25 years.
The RECON Leader 8840 series was designed in collaboration with former Swiss Army Military Security NCO Andrea Micheli and presents the “Leader,” a new chronograph alarm model for the RECON series. The watches feature an alarm function, a chrono function that enables split second timing, multiple timezones, a walking speed tachometer, a contrast-color countdown quadrant on the dial, and a bezel compass. The watchstrap contains three common map scales and an inch/centimeter measurement chart. Each watch bears the title of a different Reconnaissance team member and has different specs respective to their roles in RECON operations. The watches come in a military-style MOLLE (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) package that also doubles as a sunglasses case. The RECON series will be available for purchase this April for approximately $978 USD.
The Original Navy SEAL series first launched in 1989 and this iteration features a new 25th Anniversary dial set into the lightweight carbon-reinforced polycarbonate case. Each timepiece will retail for approximately $444 USD.
The ANU (Authorized for Navy Use) Chronograph 4240 series is designed for Maritime Commandos and Elite Military Operatives. The models sport a new quartz chronograph with an independent sweep second hand, independent sub dials, and a 12-hour elapsed timer. This series will be available this April for approximately $1,196 USD.
The Scott Cassell UVP Special Edition watch was made in homage to Scott Cassell, a combat diver and underwater explorer and in support of his Undersea Voyager Project (UVP). The watch features a stainless steel crown set in a carbon-reinforced case. Proceeds from sales of this watch will go towards the UVP.
Rolex is releasing a brand new iteration of its classic Oyster Perpetual, this time including a new 39mm case in its offerings. The classic watch boasts a clean, minimal aesthetic, crafted from corrosion-resistant 904L steel. Pops of color come in the form of a choice of dial colorways—dark rhodium with blue markers, red grape with red markers, or a blue dial with hits of green. And as always, the watches come with the brand’s iconic oyster bracelet and a 3132 caliber movement. See the entire 2015 collection and more at rolex.com.
TAG Heuer has decided to give its V4 a full black carbon composite makeover — felicitously dubbed Phantom — joining prior platinum, rose gold, and titanium versions. The watch uses mechanical belt driven, linear winding mass movement, similar to previous models. However, the exterior aesthetic receives a substantial refinement, including a carbon material, dubbed CMC Carbon Matrix Composite, on its case and bridges. Finishing off the luxury timepiece, a titanium carbide coating covers its other detail components including the hands and dial. A first run of 50 TAG Heuer Monaco V4 Phantoms are to be produced, priced at $45,000 USD each.
Omega unveiled the first Speedmaster ’57 in 2013 as a salute to one of the brand’s most iconic timepieces, and now it introduces an updated version of the model. The watch still utilizes the brand’s in-house Co-Axial caliber 9300, 41.5mm sapphire case and 100-meter water resistance, but now the watch features new broad-arrow hands and darker Superluminova coating. Furthermore the watch features include a non-magnetic silicon balance spring which provides better chronometric performance due to its low fatigue influence and the slow aging process of the material itself. The new Omega Speedmaster ’57 will be available soon at Omega stockists around the world.
In a move that speaks to its continued shift to attract younger consumers, Swiss luxury watchmaker Patek Philippe is introducing the 5524G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. Inspired by vintage pilots watches from the 1930s, the watch features a navy blue dial—a bit of a departure from a traditional black dial of most pilot watches—white gold casing, and a vintage brown calfskin watch. It has a decidedly casual vibe, and should offer a very approachable price point (by Patek’s standards). Though official pricing has yet to be announced, it is expected to come in around $50,000 USD—similar to that of two recent Patek releases, the 5960A and 5990A. For some comparison, a vintage Patek Philippe pilot watch sold in 2009 for over $1.7 million USD.
