DOPE KICKS: Nike's Kevin Durant KD8 Ferrofluid Display Brings Kicks To Life/ Nike KD 8 NSW Lifestyle "Metallic Silver"/ adidas Originals Superstar Weave "Clear Grey"/ Patta x BEAMS x Vans Old Skool "Mean Eyed Cat"/ adidas Originals Stan Smith "Black Reptile"
Creative agency Guild was commissioned by Nike to create an in-store display of its new Kevin Durant KD8 sneaker that would incite awe in those who lay their eyes on it. First, Guild 3D-printed a replica of the sneaker, mimicking the subtle patterns and textures of the fabrics used. The plastic KD8 was then placed in a shallow bath of ferrofluid, a mesmerizing black goo that reacts to magnates in a unique way. With the help of a strong, yet hidden magnetic field, the ferrofluid moves and morphs over the surface of the shoe bringing it to life. Even though the fluid tends to evaporate quickly and is a very far way off commercial application, it instills hope in us all that one day we will be wearing kicks that can change shape while on our feet
Just a couple of weeks after the release of the silhouette’s Texas Longhorns-inspired Black/Tuscan Rust-Metallic Gold debut colorway comes a shiny new take on Kevin Durant’s latest off-court signature. With an official colorway of Metallic Silver/White-Black, the Dunk-esque high-top sits atop a gum rubber outsole and full-length Zoom Air cushioning while the lightweight and breathable one-piece knit jacquard upper — and its durable fused forefoot overlay — sport a black and silver gradient. Finishing touches include quilted white leather lining, KD tongue branding and matching silver lace jewels. The “Metallic Silver” edition of the KD 8 NSW Lifestyle is available now from NSW stockists and nike.com for $140 USD.
The tried-and-true Superstar is the latest sneaker to get a woven makeover thanks to the introduction of the aptly named Superstar Weave from adidas Originals. Debuting in a “Clear Grey” colorway, the new design stays true to the original look of the the shell-toed classic, but ditches leather construction in favor of a breathable woven upper that sports multiple weave pattern throughout in order to replicate the paneling of the OG. Fans can find these now at Switzerland’s Titolo while supplies last.
Next month Amsterdam-based Patta is teaming up with BEAMS to launch a pop-up store and, to mark the occasion, the Dutch streetwear favorite has linked up with Vans to drop some collaborative kicks. Coming in the form of the tried-and-true Old Skool, the Patta x Vans release is dubbed the “Mean Eyed Cat” and comes with a predominately black aesthetic, pairing leather and suede construction with custom laces, oversized Patta branding and blues-inspired “Mean Eyed Cat” insignia along the rubber foxing. Look for the co-branded kicks to be exclusive to the Patta x BEAMS T Harajuku pop-up and select BEAMS stores in Japan beginning September 25 for ¥12,000 JPY (approximately $98 USD).
adidas Originals continues to release its iconic Stan Smith silhouette in a variety of luxe renderings. Following up on a “Collegiate Pony” colorway, the German sportswear brand’s latest effort sees the low-top done up in a striking “Black Reptile” upper, placed atop of a tonal black midsole. Silver branding at the tongue and heel tab round out the sneaker’s latest design. Purchase this unique colorway for $144 USD at select adidas Originals retailers including Afew.
